|  | Joining the White Knights...

Karei gripped hilt of her sword in one hand and her dragon, who she had named Tiamat, in the other. Leaving her bag in the bushes, she crept out on the trail and entered the White Knights camp. She had no idea how she would be accepted, so she wandered around a little, clutching Tiamat protectively and keeping her other hand close to her sword, looking for someone who could tell her how to go about joining.

Arget was on an early morning walk around the camp which he was sure to do almost every morning. He had made his way around most of the camp and was about to head back into the center of camp to conduct his mornings training when he spied movement and a flash of steel. His hand automatically strayed to one of his duel swords.
Arget reached out with his mind feeling for the intentions of whatever it was he had seen. Sensing no cruel intentions but not wishing to delve further into the others mind without first identifying them, he headed towards the place he he sensed they were.
When he finally caught sight of her for he realized it was in fact a human female. He decided to announce his presence as he did not think that she wished him harm.
"Could I possibly help you miss?" He inquired "I couldn't help but notice you sneaking around in the shadows."

Karei stared for a moment at the elf, awed. She recognized him instantly from her father's descriptions. She blushed at his words about sneaking, but only slightly, managing to remain somewhat dignified. She decided that he seemed willing to give her a chance to explain herself, and that just stating why she was there would be the best tactic. "I am Karei. I would like to join the White Knights." then, hoping she wasn't being to presumtuous, she added, "You must be Arget Istalri."

Arget smiled.
"Then you need only have asked, skulking in the shadows is a sure fire way to get your self killed or chased off." He exclaimed, "We of the White Knights will always welcome those who wish to join us in freeing the land of Arnath from the Dark Lords grasp."
Argets eyes strayed to the dragon held in the young womans hand a twinkle in his eye.
"Ahh a young rider I see, We seem to have found quite a few riders recently." Arget extended his hand towards the girl for compared to his age she was very young. "If you wish to join our ranks then you should come with me and I will introduce you to the army and find you a tent."

Karei smiled joyously. This was all of her dreams come true and more! She nodded at his words and went with him, marveling at how easy it had been. And she was to be a rider! For the White Knights! As she went with Arget, the was a little bit more spring in her step.

Arget strode into the center of the camp and a slight sense of deja vu. It was not so long ago that he made this same walk with another young lady.
Everyone in the camp was going about their daily chores.
As Arget was about to step up onto the mound that served as an podium for addressing the knights he had an idea. He wanted to test this girl to see if she had what it took to be a rider.
He turned to Karei. " You must go up onto the mound," He told her, "Once you are there I would like you to gain the attention of the camp and announce yourself as a rider. And then let them know that you wish to join us."
"I would like to see how you handle yourself infront of so many."
With that said he took a step back and waited in the sidelines to watch how she did in her first assignment.

Karei's emerald green eyes widened in surprise at this unexpected turn of events, but she did not falter. She stepped on to the mound in one graceful stride of her long legs. Once there, she surveyed the camp for a moment. Then, in a strong voice, she said, "I have an announcement to make." She was quite proud that her voice did not waver, even though she had not expected to have to address the whole camp. When she had everyone's attention, she continued, "I have been asked by Arget Istalri to introduce myself to you. My name is Karei Kayvan Sahleynek. This is my dragon, Tiamat, who is two weeks old." Tiamat proudly ruffled her wings at the sound of her name, then settled back down in Karei's arm, content to listen quietly. "I am a rider, and I have come to join the White Knights to train and to fight. Like you I am here to help defeat the Dark Lord in any way possible and take back Arnath!" She finished and stepped off the mound, walking over to Arget. She stopped in front of him and waited for him to say something, her long, dark hair flung out of her face and her green eyes flashing in triumph.

Arget watched as Karei stepped onto the mound. He was impressed by her bravery. Good things will come of this rider. He thought to himself. I agree, I have been watching her and it is not often I see such bravery in someone of her age. Aurora as always was listening circling high above.
Once Karei had finished her speech there was a mixed response, some cheered her impressed as Arget was by her bravery and spirit for the cause. However there was some muffled noises of dissent from a small group who obviously did not like to so someone so young and inexperienced demanding their attention.
Arget was about to start forwards to deal with them when a voice cut through his thoughts. Leave them to me. He was sure Aurora would do the job nicely.
With a deafening roar Aurora dropped out of the sky and slammed into the ground right infront of the group. She sent her thoughts to anyone.
If you think yourselves so high that you do not need to listen to this Rider, then you are more stupid than I thought. She has twice you courage and has passed her test to be a part of the White Knights by standing before you today. So i suggest you repay your disgusting behavior by going to find her a tent.
Aurora turned and nodded to Arget. He returned her nod with a thought. We will fly later, I look forward to it.
Arget turned to Karei. "Well done I was very impressed with your composure up there, it can be a frightening thing talking to all those people, you did well." He told her "do not listen to those men who were rude to you just then, they have been fighting for a long time and do not like being outdone by young blood."

Tiamat hissed at the rude men, arching her neck and spreading her emerald wings, ready to attack them herself if Karei would allow it, although she was still fairly small. Karei calmed her quickly, Hush, hush. It's okay. I want to fight them too, but we don't want to be the cause of a fight on our very first day here. That would be a sure way to get thrown out. Save it, my beautiful one. Save it for a time when it is really needed. Despite her soothing thoughts to Tiamat, she was sorely temped to talk to them and show them that she was not just some weakling girl to be messed with. But, unfortunately, fighting the men would not be a good idea right now, and the last thing she wanted to do was ruin a day that had been absolutely perfect so far. Instead she shot them a nasty glance, defiance etched on her face, to show them that she would not ordinarily just stand by and let them say whatever they wanted.
Then Aurora landed. Karei's defiant expression was quickly replaced by awe and wonder. She forgot about the men completely as she watched Aurora. She had never seen a full grown dragon before, only heard about them from the stories her father told, and to Karei it was a marvelous sight. She watched carefully, studying Aurora's graceful movements. Tiamat was impressed too. She chirped softly, her eyes fixed on the older dragon, as though she could make herself just as fierce and noble as Aurora, just by watching carefully enough.
When Arget spoke, she turned back to him, smiling happily at his praise. "Thank you, sir." she said respectfully, her eyes once again beaming with happiness.

He smiled at her courtesy. "Arget will be fine, I do not expect to be called sir by any of my riders."
He saw Karei and Tiamat's looks and he did not have to read minds to know what she was thinking, he knew those thoughts himself. "Do not worry there will be time to settle with them later, once you have had some training you will have no problem in showing them that you are not all talk and have the skill to follow up what you so ably said a few minutes ago."
The was a puff of warm air as Aurora snorted beside them. I would not be surprised if she already has that skill, she made it here after all and in times like these that is no easy task. She sent to Arget.
"Aurora thinks that you are already skilled enough to beat them, and I agree, however we do not want to cause a fight within the knights. That would be most unwise." Arget told her. "But forgive me, I have not yet introduced you to my partner. Karei this is Aurora."
Hello Karei Aurora sent her. I am pleased to meet you, we should find you somewhere to stay.

Karei grinned, reflecting that, not so long ago, she would have laughed in the face of anyone who had tried to tell her that she would soon be meeting Arget Istalri and his dragon. She bowed low to Aurora, Tiamat copying her, and said, "Hello Aurora. I am honored to be meeting one so noble as yourself, and thank you for your confidence in my skill, which is limited." Then, turning to Arget, Karei nodded. "My father taught me, even as a small child, not to pick unnecessary fights, especially with people I don't know." she told Arget, a thoughtful expression on her face. "He taught me a little bit about defending myself, but mostly he taught me not to let my anger get in the way of what is best for the situation at the time."

"Your father was obviously a wise man Karei!" Arget stated. "What he speaks is true, where do your family live by the way?"
Arget was now threading his way back through the camp. Aurora spoke to the small group of an elf a girl and a young dragon. I should return to the skies, the deer do not hunt themselves and the skies will not do the patrolling for me. I bid you farewell Karei and you also Tiamat, We shall meet again soon when your training begins.
Arget replied out load for the benefit of all. "Yes that is true Aurora, thank you my friend, I will see you later for it is high time that we had the chance to fly together on the wind again."
They arrived at a small tent. It was made of blue canvas and currently held nothing more than a mattress a small table and chain and a large bucket for washing in.
He turned to Karei. "I hope this tent is to your satisfaction make yourself at home, for it is now yours." He told her "Oh and before you wash I would remove the thorns from the bucket, a little prank left by those who were sent to put up this tent for you."

Karei looked down at her feet for a moment, walking along beside Arget, briefly overwhelmed by grief for her father. "I have no family." She told Arget, looking back up at him, her voice still steady, although quieter than usual. "My mother died in childbirth, and my father was killed by the Dark Lord's men less than a month ago." Her expressive green eyes shone with sorrow, but she did not lose control. She had spent much of her wandering time crying herself to sleep, but she had not done that in about a week, and she was determined not to let herself cry now. It was not too hard. Her pride got in the way. She firmly pushed thoughts of her father out of her head for the time being and refocused on the situation at hand. She gave a genuine smile that Arget could tell that there were thorns in the bucket, even without looking. She told herself that she, too, would be able to do that one day. "It is wonderful, thank you." she said, inspecting her new home. She found it a fun thought that she now had a place that was all hers, to do whatever she wanted with it. Then, turning back to Arget, "I'm honestly not being impatient, but when can I start my training?" she asked, watching him hopefully.

A kind voice spoke from the other isde of the tent. A puddle of water was resulting fro mthe mans white hair.He had very recently gone and taken a bath in the river. His sword lay strapped against one shoulder.The patch on his eye flickering lightly in the sunlight.
"Sorry if I interupted anything. Sorry about not hearing the speech, but I sure did hear Aurora's scolding.I must be going now."
With a incline of his head he stumbled off.
